Middle Years Programme

The Middle Years Programme (MYP) at our school focuses on students from ages from 11 to 16. New School aims to develop students with the attitudes, skills, and motivation necessary to become successful life-long learners. The MYP provides a framework of learning which encourages students to become creative, critical and reflective thinkers. The MYP emphasizes intellectual challenge, encouraging students to make connections between their studies in traditional subjects and the real world.

It fosters the development of skills for communication, intercultural understanding, and global engagement, qualities that are essential for life in the 21st century. Through constructive lessons, inquiry, presentations and field trips, our intention is to develop creative, independent and critical thinkers. Students are continually involved in their own education as partners with teachers through portfolios and projects. Both teacher and student assessments provide continual feedback on the thinking process and products of work. The IB Middle Years Programme consists of eight subject groups integrated through five interactive areas providing global contexts for learning.

Students are required to study at least two languages (as part of their multilingual profile), humanities, sciences, mathematics, arts, physical education and technology.

In their final year MYP5 (Grade 10), students will also undertake an independent ‘personal project’ to demonstrate the development of their skills and understanding of the MYP programme.

As well as English A and B (first and second languages), New School offers Georgian A and Georgian B, Russian, French and Spanish B. There is also a Mother Tongue programme for all MYP students which enables a student to progress with their reading, writing and speaking skills in their mother tongue language. Throughout the five years of the programme, students engage in community and service activities within the school and the wider community. This helps them to gain more experience in different settings and to learn a duty of care and consideration towards others. Students who meet the requirements in each subject, the personal project and community and service, are eligible for the MYP Completion Certificate awarded at the end of MYP5.
